The Ranch Party Round Up!
Yes indeed, folks, like I tol’ ya’ not long ago, The Averys and I are tickled to bring our Classic Country Showcase to The Shrunken Head, where we have enjoyed some great audiences in the past and some dynamite performances from some of the area’s most-top-notchest Country and American Roots talents. In addition to giving a home to The Ranch Party Round Up (Columbus’ Premier Classic Country Showcase!) as well as Jamie Lyn and Fort Knox’s twice monthly Honky Tonk Happy Hour, The Shrunken Head has presented a steady diet of Americana, Alt-Country and Roots Music, and has given a home to our particular musical community. We’d like to encourage y’all to support them in this mission.
As always, The Ranch Party Round Up will feature plenty of Classic Country and Old Style Original music from myself and The Averys, plus two other !great! country acts. We will also have a couple of rounds of Country Music Trivia, where you can win (cheap) prizes for your Country Music History knowledge. You will also enjoy the authentic sounds of real Country Music vinyl as Boots Massing, Columbus’ ONLY Classic Country Music DJ, spins records for you between sets. Have a request? If the band doesn’t know it (and we probably don’t) then Boots might have it!
This month, we are back at The Round Up with a couple of acts that we know you will enjoy. Opening the show will be Bennie James, a good old local boy who will perform a solo set of acoustic country music. Here is what Bennie has to say about himself:
“I'm one hell of a good time. I work hard. I play hard. I ride hard. Sometimes I get drunk and fall down hard. I'm a singer/ song writer- old school country sad shit. But my shows are a ball.” I like a man with a creed, and here is what Bennie has to say about that: “Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways on a Harley, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming ‘YEE HAW, what a ride!’” I reckon we can expect a rousing start to the show when Bennie James takes the stage.
Now, the other act we have enlisted for your entertainment are some of the nicest musicians who The Averys have played with, and their act has a fresh, bright quality that sometimes we don’t associate with the older styles of American music that we all love so much. They are, nonetheless, faithful to the classic sounds and song styles. The Song Birds are a quartet featuring two female singers who pay particular attention to vocal arrangements, as well as a very gifted and creative lead guitar player and a solid bassist of some experience. They describe their music as “Folk with a twang”, but they don’t skimp on the twang. If Bennie James fires us all up too much with a rowdy set, maybe these Song Birds will help us take it easy a little bit; they have a very musical and nuanced sound. The Averys are pleased to welcome Jessi, Savannah, Brian and Jon to The Ranch Party Round Up!
To sweeten the deal, though, we are going to try and bring in a couple of “ringers” for this show. Schedules permitting, you may see our good friends Chris Shaw and/or Chris Adams join us on stage to add their talents to The Averys’ show. Chris S is the fiddle player who has helped us out in the past, and we have had Chris A join us on lap steel before. These gentlemen know their stuff, and we’ll do what we can to get ‘em out for ya’ this Sunday! If ya' can't be there. then at least be somewhere!

Now, as you know, we are committed to providing you the most for your entertainment dollar, which in this case is no dollar at all, since the Round Up remains a FREE SHOW. Of course, we offer you the option of tipping the bands- we all appreciate your support, and nobody likes to pay to see a band they don’t like. If the show’s no good, you don’t pay. It’s basically a “money back” guarantee! To sweeten the deal, though, we are going to try and bring in a couple of “ringers” for this show.
