December Round Up Talent

The Slick City Ramblers
with
Matt Monta
and
Slim White and The Averys

Howdy Rounder Uppers! Ol' Slim here once again with your monthly uptown lowdown on Columbus's premier Classic Country Showcase, the one and only original Ranch Party Round Up! Accept no substitutes!

We Averys spend a lot of time prowling around town to various taverns and nightspots, all in a quest to find the finest Country and American Roots musicians from the Central Ohio region. We have a thriving Americana community around these parts, and it is our pleasure to provide you with a reliable monthly opportunity to enjoy the sort of Classic Country sounds that have survived and persisted down through generations. There is no need to scour your local entertainment weekly, looking for great Classic Country Music, when you know that every month, on the second Sunday, you can ramble on down to The Shrunken Head in Victorian Village for The Ranch Party Round Up.

This month we are pleased to welcome The Slick City Ramblers to the stage. These boys are hard core country and totally dedicated to their craft, and they are real gentlemen to boot. If y'all follow the local Americana scene, then you'll recognize the names Zacharia Whitney, Andyman Hopkins, and Adam Cummins from their many appearances around town in various projects, all with a nice twangy attitude about them. The core of the band is guitar, bass and drumming, with "sangin', howlin' and percussin'" and additional melodic and harmonic contributions from other local Country Music luminaries. We are not sure what sort of lineup Slick City will bring for y'all come Sunday, but we know for certain that they will play you some tasty licks and some great songs.

Our other featured act for this Sunday will be a familiar name to most of you, although he is not known as a Country performer. Our good friend Matt Monta is an Averys supporter and we are certainly fans of his Hot Coal Band. Avery Ox has even filled in on the drums with Hot Coal in the past. But for as long as the Ranch Party Round Up has existed, the question has remained: Good as he is, could Monta ever be Country enough to play the show? Well, finally one night at Joshua P James' Skin A Cat show (where, incidentally, Slick City were headlining....), I flat out challenged Matt to get his twang on for a Round Up. He assured me he could turn in a solid Country set, so we booked it.

Well, I had an opportunity to pass a guitar back and forth with Matt earlier this week, and he sampled a few of his Country numbers for me, so I can promise you that Matt will be able to meet the challenge that I gave him, and we are looking forward to a great set from one of Columbus' most committed song writers and performers.

Of course, The Averys will do our thing as well, and Boots will spin some real Classic Country vinyl for you between sets. There will be the usual Classic Country Music Trivia game with the usual crappy prizes, and the usual "one too many" whiskeys. (That's my favorite brand, by the way: One Too Many. Ask for it by name.) All of this great entertainment and no cover charge whatsoever. How do we do it? We are driven by a totally irrational love for Classic Country Music.
