Howdy, Friends and Neighbors!Here it is once again time for me to remind y'all about this month's festivities at The Ranch Party Round Up! By now you folks will know all about the many exciting things that we have lined up for you each and every second Sunday at the Shrunken Head in Victorian Village. Let's run 'em down for you real quick:
1. FREE entertainment. That is a good value at a time when most of us are trying to save a dollar here and a doller there. We bring our city's most dedicated and talented Traditional Country and American Roots performers to the stage every month. These fine musicians play for your tips alone, because they love the music and they love to see your smiling faces in the audience.
2. Columbus's only Real Vinyl Classic Country Music DJ, Boots Massing, spinning records live for you between sets. Did you ever go to see a great Country band, only to hear the sound man put on Young Jeezy or Widespread Panic betwen live sets? You may secretly like Widespread Panic, but they have no place at a Country show. We've solved this problem for you.
3. Stupid Trivia Game. Yes, folks, we have scoured the region for a variety are maginally interesting prizes that you can win if you know your Classic Country Music history. Get the right answer (it's probably "Merle Haggard" or "Buck Owens") and you could win an embroidered beer patch or a jar of Ranch Party Round Up Barbeque Sauce, or this damned Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt cassette we've been trying to unload for the past six months.
4. Excellent Sound: We have been playing this show for so long that by now, Travis knows pretty much what to expect from us, and he always dials in a great sound for both the audience and the performers. You don't always get that, especially at certain venues who shall remain unnamed here but you know who you are.
5. Excellent food and service from the fine folks at The Shrunken Head. We in The Averys Organization have negotiated a special contract rider that specifies certain talented hospitality professionals to be on hand, behind the bar and in the kitchen, to ensure that our loyal audience receives nothing but the friendliest service when attending this premier showcase for Columbus's Classic Country and American Roots talent. the Head has recently added a selection of delicious pizzas to their offerings. I tried one at the last Round Up, even though I am gluten intolerant and have no business eating pizza crust. It was delicious and did not kill me.
6. Great Music! This is, in fact, the entire point of the Round Up. This month, we are welcoming back to the stage some veteran Round Up family in the persons of The Song Birds and Brothers. The Song Birds have played a couple of Round Ups, I believe. They are returning to the show in the midst of promoting their new album and cranking up their summer performance schedule after a little time off for Jessi and Savannah to introduce their new babies to the world. You will enjoy a range of sounds from The Song Birds, including very jangly lead guitar lines and plinkety banjo, a little mandolin and a whole lot of sweet vocal harmonies. This band plays classic songs that you love and also their own very authentically country compositions. They have it all and they are bringing it to the show for you this Sunday.
Brothers are a two man act featuring our friends Ian Hummel, of The Apple Botton Gang, and Zach Whitney of Slick City Ramblers. These gentlemen have teamed up to form a duo that is well versed in the classics, but truly focused on original songs that take their cues from the greats. These are songwriters with a flair for a solid lyric and an authentic country song form. Ian and Zach are also very much at home on the stage, each of them able to tell a story or a joke to keep the show rolling along.
Of course The Averys and I will be on hand to play our usual two sets of classics as well as our own original, sometimes slightly weird songs. The Averys sound is almost pure Bakersfield. I say "almost" because sometimes we'll write something kind of not-so-Bakersfield, but we always put it through the patented Averys Bakersfieldization protocol so that it comes out sounding Bakersfield. It's a special skill that we have developed. You can expect at least two new songs from us this Sunday, so if, like me, you are sick of hearing us play "Drink Up And Be Somebody", then you have the material to look forward to at least.
