Lydia Loveless and The Apple Bottom Gang This Sunday!

Howdy Folks. That's right, it's Slim again. Even through the long Ohio winter, The Ranch Party Round Up has really been heating up these past few months, with great sets from the likes of Matt Monta, The Hanging Deadmen, Broken Ukele, Slick Andrews and the Generators, Andy and Chrissy, and The Slick City Ramblers, to name just a few. The folks in the audience, though, are the ones who really nmake this show happen. Without you comin' out, we're sittin' at home lookin' for cheap guitars on Craig's List.

This month we have two genuine country acts who will be joining us for their Round Up debut. Now, the lady in the picture at the top of the page, Lydia Loveless, has played a solo set at The Round Up back a few months ago, and we knew we'd have to get her back with her band some time down the road. Well, we are down the road now, so The Averys are pleased to welcome Lydia back, with her band in tow, for the full treatment of her show. Most of you know that Lydia has just been picked up by Bloodshot records, home to such artists as Bobby Bare Jr, Justin Townes Earle, Robbie Fulks, Rosie Flores, Graham Parker, and just a whole lot more heavy hitters. She and her band are off to Austin next week to do their thing at SXSW, and they've got bigger shows to play than The Round Up, so let's show 'em some extra folding love so they can live it up a little while they're down there showin' Texas what Columbus has to offer the world of Country Music!
The other Country Music act that we are presenting Sunday evening are another one our local stalwarts, The Apple Bottom Gang. The Averys have really been looking forward to bringing this extremely large band out for a Round Up, and by "large" I mean they have a lot of members, probably more folks than they have at the hobo camp down by the river. Unless The Apple Bottom Gang are the hobo camp. I try not to quote directly from a band's own bio too often, but Apple Bottom are one of those acts that have a highly informative blurb, so I will share it with you here, since I could hardly give you a better idea of what to expect from these fine folks:
"The Apple-Bottom Gang likes robbing trains. They’re really good at it. When they’re not doing that, they’re sitting around playing old country songs. Songs by fellers named Buck and Hank and Ernest and Lefty and Johnny (both Cash AND Horton). This is a big gang with a big sound. It’s a very-table hillbilly orchestra!I.R. sings and plans the heists. Stinky Fingers plays the guitar and banjo and blows stuff up. Trixie-Lou sings and claps and takes care of the get-away ponies. Fancy Jeffro blows the harp and is quick on the draw. Sweet D hits and scratches on stuff and cons the fellas. Staggerin’ Lee picks the mandolin and is a crack rifle shot. Louis St. Louis thumps the bass and Stomp Winchester bangs the drums and is the muscle of the gang. Hillbilly, honky-tonk, country and western music, both covered and original, played with a wink and a smile... That there’s The Apple-Bottom Gang! And away they go... The 4:20 out of Albuquerque is due by any minute."
I want to personally endorse any band that bothers to have nicknames for each member. That is always a good indicator of a quality show.
Don't forget we are still on the Winter Hours at the Round Up- 5 to 9 PM. As always, we will present four hours of entertainment, including sets from our special guests as well as The Averys, plus Country Music Vinyl DJ Boots Massing spinning records between sets, and Classic Country Music Trivia from Papa Ox. There will be prizes. Come out and enjoy some delicious eats and a great selection of beers and booze at The Shrunken Head!

This Friday! Six to Eight PM! At The Head!

Howdy. It's me again, Ol' Slim. Folks, I don't mind admittin' that this winter has been a long and gloomy one, what with all the snow and ice and gray skies and cold, cold mornings. It'll make a man drink. I mean, drink more than usual. But the things are lookin' sunnier now and even though it is only early March, I think we are through the worst of it, so it is time to shake off them Central Ohio Winter Time Blues and get out to enjoy an extra twangy super action-packed Averys show.

Now, our good friend and fellow Classic Country Music booster Jamie Lyn has been by our side from the very beginning, helping us to spread the gospel. She has been hosting the Honky Tonk Happy Hour twice a month at The Shrunken Head for the past year or so, and in fact it was The Averys' first appearance at her Happy Hour show that got our foot in the door over there. That very night we were able to book our own Ranch Party Round Up to take place every month, so we have a special place in our hearts for the Honky Tonk Happy Hour. Well, Jamie Lyn is handing over the reins of the show to Country Matt, our buddy Matt Montaw. This Friday evening Matt will open the show with a few of his own songs, after which The Averys will take the stage. We plan on playing one long set filled with the usual blend of classic songs by your favorite Country Music Legends, as well as our own original compositions that are primarily about drinking and hard luck. Matt will have a raffle for a prize of some sort, although that kind of depends on what your definition of "prize" is.

I just want to personally guarantee each and every one of you that this will be a dynamic set of tightly arranged tunes played with enthusiasm and professionalism. I can say this because we are still all wound up after attending the Cash Only tribute show last week and seeing once again the awesome power of the Columbus Country Music community! So we will see you Friday night at The Shrunken Head!

Now Giddyap!
